The difference between alkali glass fiber (e-glass) and alkali-free glass fiber (C-glass)

The difference between alkali glass fiber (e-glass) and alkali-free glass fiber (C-glass)

2019-12-31

Alkali-free fiber (commonly known as E-glass): R20 content is less than 0.8%: it is an aluminoborosilicate component. Its chemical stability, electrical insulation performance and high strength. Mainly used as electrical insulation materials, glass fiber reinforced plastics and tire cords.

Medium alkali fiber (C glass): The content of R20 is 11.9% -16.4%. It is a soda-lime-silicate component. Because of its high alkali content, it cannot be used as an electrical insulation material, but its chemical stability and strength are still good. Generally used as latex cloth, gingham cloth substrate, acid filter cloth, window screening substrate, etc., can also be used as a glass fiber reinforced plastic reinforced material with less strict electrical properties and strength requirements. This fiber has a lower cost and is more versatile. Such as: composite cable bracket

Performance comparison between medium alkali and alkali free glass fiber:

The strength of alkali-free glass fiber is higher than that of medium alkali glass fiber. There are many factors that affect the strength of glass fibers, including chemical composition, fiber diameter, storage time, and environment. For the actual production of glass fiber products, its strength also has a lot to do with the quality of glass melting, the molding process and equipment, and the type and quality of the wetting agent. The elastic modulus and elongation at break are also important indicators reflecting the properties of the material. Glass fiber has a high elastic modulus, a small elongation, and no plastic elongation, which are the characteristics of glass fibers.

Chemical stability refers to the ability of glass fibers to resist water, acid, alkali and other media. Usually measured by the mass loss before and after the erosion of the medium, the amount of precipitated alkali and the glass components entering the erosion medium, strength loss and diameter reduction rate and other indicators to measure.

The alkali-free glass fiber has lower weight loss and alkali precipitation in water than medium-alkali glass fiber, indicating that the alkali-free glass fiber has better water resistance than medium-alkali glass fiber.

In acidic solution, the weight loss of medium alkali glass fiber is much lower than that of non-alkali glass fiber, indicating that the acid resistance of medium alkali glass fiber is obviously better than that of alkali-free glass fiber.

Regardless of weight loss or dissolved silicon ion concentration, the alkali-free glass fiber is higher than the medium-alkali glass fiber. It can be seen that the alkali-resistant glass fiber has slightly better alkali resistance than the alkali-free glass fiber.

Glass fiber is the skeleton of glass fiber reinforced plastic grid. It is mainly used for load bearing. The more layers of fiber silk, the stronger the load. It is divided into alkali-free wire, medium-alkali wire, and the price is also different. It is necessary to determine which glass fiber production is used according to its place of use.
