How is fiberglass made and can fiberglass be recycled?

Fiberglass is made of glass wire drawing. After the glass is heated and melted, it forms a viscous glass fluid, which can be used for wire drawing.

However, fibers for different purposes require glass with different components, and not all glass can be used.

①. Fiberglass used as optical fibers need to be colorless and transparent glass with good light transmission and sufficient toughness. The outer surface is covered with a layer of reflective material, so that the optical signal propagates in the glass fiber and minimizes optical loss.

②The Fiberglass used for textile needs to be blended with cotton, chemical fiber and other materials, and the glass fiber content should not be too high, because the glass fiber is brittle and easy to break, so it cannot be used for fine weaving, and can only be used to make rough insulation cloth wait.

③. Fiberglass  used for sound insulation, heat insulation, etc. does not have high material requirements. Generally, it is directly mixed with wall paint and then painted, or made into rough glass fiber cloth and pasted on the wall, and then covered with paint .

Other uses are not listed one by one, but one commonality is that glass fiber is mixed with other materials and it is difficult to separate.

Therefore, unless the waste products of the glass fiber factory can be returned to the furnace for resmelting, other glass fibers that have been made or used have almost no recycling value.

There have been news before that thieves stole the copper cables on the utility poles, mistakenly cut the optical cables as copper cables and stole them, causing huge losses, but the cut optical cables have no recycling value.
