September 25, 2023: The European glass fiber industry is proud to announce the publication of a position paper entitled "Circular Economy in European Continuous Fiberglass Manufacturing". This new submission highlights the industry’s commitment to significantly reducing waste generation within its facilities, with the ultimate goal of ensuring no in-house glass waste ends up in landfill.

European Fiberglass Association member organizations are working hard to identify and implement innovative solutions that closely align with the EU Waste Framework Directive. These measures aimed at preventing wastage, promoting reuse and promoting recycling have already achieved substantial results. Over the past decade, glass waste sent to landfill has fallen from 11% to 6.9% of fiberglass production.

The published position paper provides a comprehensive overview of several important aspects, including:

1. Identify the Sources of Glass Loss: This document highlights areas in fiberglass manufacturing plants where glass loss typically occurs. Understanding these important areas allows for more effective mitigation strategies.

2. Implementation of sustainable measures: European Fiberglass Association members have taken action to implement sustainable practices aimed at minimizing waste generation. The submission details these measures and their effectiveness in reducing waste going to landfill.

3. Authority support: To facilitate the transition to zero landfill, this submission provides insights into how government authorities can support the fiberglass industry. Collaboration between industry stakeholders and regulators is critical to achieving this common goal.

The European fiberglass industry’s efforts towards the circular economy and waste reduction are not only in line with international sustainable development goals, but also reflect the industry’s contribution to the European Green Deal agenda.
